Mentioning the word autism evokes a number of different responses. Some people have a great deal of knowledge about the disorder, while others base their opinions on assumptions and very few facts. Much of what we are witnessing are fear based reactions to autism based upon misinformation and a lack of exposure to those on the spectrum. Fear of individuals with autism may manifest on the job, in social circles, or even within the immediate family. There is a global movement that entails discovering the humanity of the person with autism, as opposed to judging them by the label. Generally speaking, the world is finding out that autistic adults do indeed feel and some are capable of engaging in rich and fulfilling relationships. Most importantly, like everyone else, autistic adults are seeking the opportunity to find meaning and purpose in life.
